Been really busy getting things together for the Trek, had guests in town for the weekend, got a quick hike up Camelback mountain on Sunday, and am getting ready for my sisters wedding in Carmel, CA. I spent most of the day yesterday trying to figure out an open source photo editor called Gimp, as well as troubleshooting some problems I was having with wordpress.
I was just thinking how we who live in Phoenix, AZ usually try to get out of town during the summer months as the heat can be quite oppressive. Guess I didn’t plan the trip, or the date of the World Cup finals, but wish I were going somewhere a bit more moderate in climate with my travel time. Next time!
I haven’t heard from many people with tips for the trek, if you have an idea or suggestion for us please hit me up! Leave a comment, email me, call me, heck even snail mail me.
I thought it would be cool to have a pen pal classroom for the trip but as we are driving in summer, unless the school is a year round school, most will be on summer vacation. If you can help me with finding a school to be involved with I would greatly appreciate it!
I have had many people ask me to clarify some things about the World Cup Trek 2010, so I thought I would lay out the basic information:
- Start date-May 9, 2010 Berlin, Germany (home of the 2006 World Cup)
- End Date-July 13, 2010 Cape town South Africa (home of the 2010 World Cup)
- 10,000+ miles/16,000+kilometers
- 16 Countries including-Germany, France, Spain, Morocco, Mauritania, Mali, Burkina Faso, Benin, Nigeria, Cameroon, Gabon, Congo, DR Congo, Angola, Namibia, South Africa
- 6 People-set in teams of two per vehicle. (plus camera crew, editor, director)
- 3 Cars-$1000 budget per team of two to buy a car in Berlin (craigslist style)
- 8 Weeks total time (7 weeks travel time)
- 3 NGO’s- Grassrootsoccer, Kick4Life, Coaching for Hope
The trek was originally planned as an event that people could sign up and join in. Burgess Productions became involved and the adventure/reality TV series was deemed the best way to get the most exposure for the NGO’s we are involved with. The basic route is set, but there will be many surprises along the way!
